From: Brett Engle Date: Thu, 6 Mar 1997 11:10:31 -0500 (EST) I was just wondering if there are any plans to make the hotline server run as a faceless background app similar to netpresenz or webstar? it can be really handy to not have to worry about someone else quiting the server because they don't know what it is. I do realize that its not the best idea to run a server on a public machine, but my office isn't the most private place and people occasionally use the mac. its a thought :) Brett Engle -[Windows95:Proof you can be 10 years late and still get most of the credit]- | Brett Engle -- engleb@river.it.gvsu.edu -- http://www2.gvsu.edu/~engleb | -[ Windows95:The best thing since New Coke ]- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Tracking servers From: Bengt Stenstr Date: Thu, 6 Mar 97 20:33:22 +0100 Seems the problem with tracking servers is still there...even the macline.fwparker.org tracker seems to be out of function. The hotline.roadfeldt.com tracker is the main one. When that one is not functioning, use macline.fwparker.org however, if you are STILL having problems, and I know somepeople are getting error messages EVERYWHERE, even when other people ARE able to use the tracker, follow these steps: 1. Place your cursor in the Tracker IP# box 2. Choose "Select All" from the edit menu. 3. Press "Delete: 4. TYPE, (do NOT paste), the tracker address. 5. Choose "Save" this SHOULD solve any problems. If you follow these steps EXACTLY as written, and it STILL doesn't work, than it is the tracker's fault. Contact the sys admin of the tracker server. ______________________________ Phil Hilton Director of Public Relations Hotline Communications http://www.HotlineSW.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Hotline Server From: Zorkian Date: Thu, 6 Mar 97 17:19:30 -0500 I've found a problem with the server app... If my PPP connection drops while my server app is open, then the PPP reconnects w/o restarting the server app, the server is inaccessable... both from trackers and from the usual connection window... This is *obviously* only a problem for people running a server from a dynamic IP, but still, it is a BIG problem for those of us with a dymanic IP who want to leave a server up while we are doing other things... If so, there is one way... but I would not recommend it... anyways, in your TCP/IP control panel, there is an option for a 'manual' connection... you can specify an IP port here... but, the problem with this is depending on that specific IP port not to be filled by another request... Anyhow I have a couple of questions. When I select the tracker through the hotline client it brings up a list of servers it is well, tracking. When I double click on one the servers it tries to connect, but (I presume) it uses an anonymous login. What I need to do is use a username and password for some, servers. Does anybody know how to do that? Also, (and this would solve the above problem) I would like to be able to find out the current IP number of servers listed in the tracker window as some servers offer ftp as well as hotline, but I need the IP to enable a connection. Thanks for any info on the above problems. -- | Brett Waring | bwaring@yallara.cs.rmit.edu.au | http://minyos.its.rmit.edu.au/~bwaring | Year 3, Computer Science, RMIT Melbourne ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Some tracker questions From: pramsey@mail.tds.net Date: Thu, 6 Mar 1997 23:16:05 -0400 >When I select the tracker through the hotline client it brings up >a list of servers it is well, tracking. Does anybody know how to do that? When you have the tracker window open, single click on a server to hilight it, then, holding the option key, *single-click the connect button.* This is the first button on the top left of the tracker window. Do NOT double click the server name as this will just act normal (ie it won't recognize the option key, don't ask me why) This will give you the connect window with the ip. > Also, (and this would solve the above problem) I would like to be able > to find out the current IP number of servers listed in the tracker > window as some servers offer ftp as well as hotline, but I need the IP > to enable a connection. I am writing an applescript application that may solve your problem for you. However, it's primary function is to give people your IP. It's secondary function is to maintain you connection. It's designed for someone with a dynamic IP and a connection time limit. It's called IP Re.mailer 1.0a17. It's still an alpha version right now, but seems to work fine for me. =DF-) Just email me to get more info, if you're interested. __ __ /| | /| | \ / | | | LaserLinX | | | "Life is a terminal \ / | | | Jeffrey J.
