Bye Fabrizio ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: IMPORTANT NOTE ON WAREZ SERVERS IN TRACKERS (and answers to several questions) From: Phil Hilton Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 14:45:39 -0500 >I found that " Show Join/Leave in Chat " option doesn't work . >I'd like what is its function and why it doesn't work. It has not been implemented yet. More than likely it will be in v.b21, which will be released much sooner than expected. How soon? Lets just say I'm not even going to bother setting up a preview page on the web. :) >I'd like to know when tracker server will be released . The tracker will be released as soon as Adam Fixes it. The user count is not acurate in the statistics box. >Please tell me how can I can sign up to a tracker server. In the "options" window, enter the number: 207.70.237.7 beside where it says, "Tracker". This is the main tracker When this tracker fails for one reason or another. We at Macline, do our best to get another on eup to take it's place until we here that it is working again. Therefore, the IP# of the backup tracker is: 204.95.233.208 Keep that on your notepad for future reference. When the tracker is released, anyone may host a tracker. We urge people to try to stick to the main tracker unless people would like to establish private networks of Hotline servers. Soon the tracker will be networkable within themselves, and you will be able to connect to any of them in the network (Much like efnet has many servers all around the world, there will be various trackers connected in the same way) Very few people have the tracker software, and they have been instructed NOT to distribute it. They were able to setup temporary trackers when no one else was able to. I urge you to not post your warez or xxx server to the main tracker. I can't speak for roadfledt, (The host of the main tracker), but when Macline runs the backup tracker when roadfledt is unable to for one reason or another, we DO NOT ALLOW WAREZ OR XXX SERVERS. We try to post an announcment in the tracker list. The bottom line is this, if we find servers that we feel are questionable, WE WILL SHUT IT DOWN. PERIOD. There is usually a warez tracker up someplace. Find the IP# of that, and use it. Do NOT infect the clean trackers. Thank you. Yes, Hotline is actually meant to run under 7.5. If you really don't want to upgrade to 7.5, I'll mail you a patch that fixes the incompatibility with 7.1.x. ____________________________________________________________________ Adam Hinkley, developer of Hotline ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: [Long] Press Kit/PR - Hotline 1.1 beta 20 From: David Murphy Date: Tue, 18 Feb 97 23:36:18 -0500 USING THE INTERNET HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER--NOT TO MENTION MORE FUN! Melbourne, Australia -- Hotline Communications announced the release of version 1.1 beta 20 of Hotline, the all new internet communications tool for the Mac OS. Hotline, authored by Adam Hinkley , is a new client/server technology for internet and intranet communications. It supports file transfer, chat, and news--But does not utilize the aging FTP, IRC, and NNTP standards. Instead, Hotline is designed to take advantage of the Mac OS in ways that these unix-based protocols cannot. From the moment that you launch Hotline, and marvel at it's instantaneous response, and starkly cool features, you won't be able to go back. T H E F I N E S T F E A T U R E S : When you first start Hotline, you'll be asked to choose a nickname and icon to represent you. You then connect to a server by either typing information in, or selecting a bookmark to use. Once you've connected, you'll notice that Hotline is divided up into different windows, which you can show or hide as you fancy. You'll see Real-time conversations being carried out in the chat window; messages that are posted in the news window; a list of users with the option for private messages in the user list; a list of transactions between the server you are connected to and your computer, detailed in the Tasks window; and a customizable tool bar for easy access to all of the above. The File Transfer improvements introduced in Hotline are numerous. The good old FTP system used to seem great...but it just can't doesn't offer these Hotline advantages: -> Resumable file transfer every time. Compare this to a traditional tool such as Fetch, a well respected FTP tool. As of Fetch 3.0.2b3, you must meet many requirements to resume a download. Notably, you can only resume if the FTP server supports the restart (REST) command, and if you have not quit since you began the download. Hotline, on the other hand, will ALWAYS let you resume your download OR upload. As long as you have not deleted the partial file on your from your hard drive, Hotline can resume the transfer. No questions asked! -> Support for any file format. With Hotline, you don't need to convert your files to strange formats (such as BinHex/.hqx). Hotline recognizes Macintosh files, and will even display a representative icon (Ex.: application, text file, read-only text file, etc.) -> File Queuing. You can easily queue files for transfer one-at-a-time, or transmit or receive them at the same time. Hotline's alluring chat and news features warrant description, too. The Chat window is divided up into two simple parts: A log of all that has been said (labeled with the nickname of who said it), and an area for typing new tidbits. The News window is even easier. You'll find a listing there of all the tidbits that people have chosen to post. The news section is often used for announcements of new servers, or to schedule future virtual "meetings". B E T A 2 0 I S B E T T E R : The latest public beta introduces a multitude of advances and tweakings: -> New "Tracker" button on toolbar (and in menu) connects to a tracker server specified in the Options window, and displays a list of currently active servers (with name, user count, description). Double-click a server to connect to it. -> More helpful user list: Users that have been inactive for 10 minutes are grayed out, and the names of administrators of the server are drawn in red. -> Private message windows have been vastly improved. -> Various interface improvements -> Those with special access privs. can find out info. about a user. -> When the name or icon is changed (Options window) when connected, it will update in the user list without having to reconnect. -> Various bug fixes: Queued file transfers now work as expected (they were accidentally broken in b19). Critical sections of text engine have been rewritten in order to fix bugs, and improve performance and reliability. -> New options window with tabs and extra settings, e.g., color of chat text, always queue transfers etc. G E T O N L I N E W I T H H O T L I N E ! Obtaining and setting up Hotline is a breeze! 1 -> Check the requirements: PowerPC or 68K Macintosh running Mac OS 7.5 or later (7.5.5 recommended), with Open Transport 1.0 (1.1.1 or better strongly recommended). Hotline will not work with MacTCP. If you have a modem and a PPC Mac, OT/PPP is strongly recommended. It is noticeably faster and is Open Transport native. FreePPP is recommended for 68K Macs. 2 -> Download and decode the version of Hotline appropriate for your Mac: You can obtain Hotline in one two formats--the PowerPC Native version or the 68k variation. Hotline can be obtained at a number of locations, which are linked at . After downloading, decode the file with Stuffit Expander. 3 -> Follow the instructions listed in the Read Me files. Then, you're done! Hotline is $25 shareware. While there is currently no disabling mechanism if you do not pay the shareware fee, you are morally obliged register. You can do so easily with the included Kagi Shareware Register application. Need more information about Hotline? Visit the official web site: or mail the author . Thank You!
