You can't make cookies without the dough! ok. although i think that this entire thread has NOTHING to do with hotline, especially because in effect, HotLine is being advertised by MacConnect, Kagi Shareware, and a couple of other places, i will have to add my annoying opinions. first off, hotline is already being advertised relatively well, considering the fact that it is shareware. second off, hinks shouldn't be worrying about becoming M$'s marketing department when he should be making the server less crash resistant etc. (note to hinks: FIX THE SERVER SO IT LOCKS THE HD WHEN IT IS DOWN TO LIKE 5K, INSTEAD OF CRASHING!) third, i think you people who are talking about marketing should a)go to or b)think of some more stuff for hinks to do so he doesn't get any sleep and eventually becomes addicted to caffeine. just my opinion... --------------------------------------------------------- Get Your *Web-Based* Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Gates...(insanely insanely long) From: "Mike Richards" Date: 20 Jan 1997 16:35:58 -0000 > I think what David i never get credit for my ideas... >meant by gates was file linking between multiple servers....showing a >file on one server and when someone tries to download >it when on that server, the server with the actual file on it sives it to the user. um...well...sorta... ok, this is how gates work on FC. 1) both admins set up their servers to allow a special account on. 2) the special account goes to both servers(one on each server) 3) the special account looks at the directories it was assigned to (i.e. the myth dir) 4) the special account looks for files which the server that it is from(server a) does not have in the specific dir. 5) the special account transfers the files that each server does not have between them. so. this is how it would work. 1) Server 1's admin, joe bob, sets up the gate. Server 2's admin, bob joe, sets up the gate. 2) the gate account "Mr.Gates :-(" appears on both servers 3) the special account looks at the dir it was assigned to, say pub:bungie:myth:movies server 1 has archers.mov in that directory. server 2 has dwarves.mov and archers.mov in that directory 4&5) "Mr.Gates :-(" sees that server 1 does not have dwarves.mov, so it transfers it directly to server 1. ok, that was sorta long. in fact, this message will be insanely long. the second wway that this could work is to use something like EnLink FTP for fc... this could work by making a directory which showed the files on another server, and then if one was requested (read:downloaded) the magical file would be transfered between the servers and then to the user. example: The amazing server of death™ has a directory named "Files from the land of iz™" (the land of iz is a server :-P ). When a user downloads a file from that directory, it transfers from the land of iz™ to the amzing server of death™, to the user. this could work w/ftps too. you get the point. course, w/ftps you couldn't resume. damn. i've typed too much, and it's probably all incomprehensible. --------------------------------------------------------- Get Your *Web-Based* Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: HotLine Doubler News Update? "theSlacker" won't tell me how Hotline Doubler works, although he claims it speeds Hotline up by 20% or so. I was unable to detect any speed improvement. Unless theSlacker feels like explaining to everyone what on earth his extension does, my official opinion is don't use it. ____________________________________________________________________ Adam Hinkley, developer of Hotline ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: OT only? I personally believe the less in the system folder the better. Plug-ins are easier to develop and control. With plug in support the application can remain relatively small and simple while advanced users could take advantage of more complexed features. (eg. security plugin, graphics plugin etc.) other suggestions 1) wider support of commonly used icons. 2) server side monitoring of useres. login status etc. (i think someone may have mentioned this before) 3) if plug-in developer toolkit. 4) file syncronization 5) direct open (see www.wide-open.com) 6) ftp compatability. 7) program linking considerations???
