Temporary BAN on all .Zip attachments continues.

We have seen no signs of this latest round of .zip viruses slowing down, as to date are blocking about 1500/hr. We will continue the temporary ban on .zip files for the time being. If you have any questions, or concerns, please email us at support@mia.net

Temporary BAN on all .Zip attachments)

We have instituted a temporary ban on the receipt of .zip attachments. After the latest rash of Microsoft Viruses, we have had no other choice but to ban all .zip files. We tried to write several filters to try to combat the various variants of .zip virus attachments only to find that the virus names change at will. For the time being the best way to protect our customer base from the spread and damage of this virus is to ban .zip attachments. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

You can of course send your attachments, or instruct your sender to send you attachments as .gzip. If you are using Linux, BSD, Mac or MacOSX, there is no threat from this virus. .sit files can still be sent and received. Again, sending files as .gzip is the best method for sending compressed files under the Windows platform.

Once we are confident that this virus threat is over, or we are able to create a filter that negates the need for banning .zip files, we will of course pull the ban. In the mean time, please use .gzip.

VIRUS ALERT (Temporary BAN on all .Zip attachments)

There is a new Virus floating around on the net it is named "Mimail.r - W32/Mydoom - W32.Novarg.A" It appears to be another DOS/SPAM Zombie. We believe that "Mydoom" opens a connection on TCP port 3127, an indication of a remote access component. We have temporarily blocked all .Zip attachment as this virus is sent as a .Zip in many cases. Some of the names of the file that is attached are:

"Body.Zip" and "MyPhotos.zip" More information is available from Symantec Online here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.html

The Temporary BAN on all .Zip Files will remain in affect indefinitely.

If you need help removing the virus, if you downloaded it, please send us an email at support@mia.net

VIRUS HOAX ALERT PART 2

There is another internet hoax being emailed to Mia.Net users that again, claims to have caught a virus. The message has "VIRUS ALERT" in large letters at the top and claims to come from the "mia.net Billing Department". This hoax appears to be the same as the "mia.net virus department" email mentioned on 1/18/04. It again, asks you to click on a link and then tries to download a file to your computer. Do not do as this message asks. The file itself is a virus. If you have already downloaded this file, we suggest you again, update your anti virus software and scan your machine. We have written new filters to block this email and are specifically targeting the subject and body contents. As mentioned previously, WE WILL NOT PULL THIS FILTER FOR ANY REASON WHAT SO EVER.

As always, if you need help removing the virus, if you downloaded it, please send us an email at support@mia.net
